Some people claim that beavers are not a native species to San Diego County and for this reason these animals should not be introduced into our rivers and creeks.
“Beavers are an invasive species to San Diego County!”
Wrong.
Recent research demonstrates that historically beaver were present in every coastal watershed from the Oregon border to the Mexican border, including San Diego County.
Indirect evidence of this fact can be found on any map of San Diego County. If one looks at a detailed map of the Sweetwater River, one will see a location through which that river courses named “Beaver Hollow”. Why would anyone name a location “Beaver Hollow” if there were never any beaver there??

Beavers are nature’s engineers. Their dams retain massive quantities of water which help many species of animals, improve habitats, decrease riverbed erosion, and can dramatically increase the water supply for humans during times of drought. San Diego County needs beavers!

Tell your legislators to change California law. Currently it is against the law to relocate beavers. Let’s end this law. Let’s return beavers to the rivers and creeks of San Diego County!
