
Several hundred years ago, beavers and their dams could be found in every coastal watershed in what is now California, including the watersheds of San Diego County. European colonization and trapping wiped them out in much of the state.
But…they’re back!
Beavers are making a come back in many parts of the United States. Humans are starting to realize just how important this animal is to creating and maintaining healthy, vibrant watersheds.
Beavers have even returned to San Diego County, but only in one river: the Santa Margarita River, which begins near Temecula, courses through the hills north of Fallbrook, and then flows into the Pacific Ocean on Camp Pendleton. Here is some physical evidence of their presence in this river:




Dear Readers: Demand that the California legislature change the law to allow the relocation of beavers to all of San Diego County’s rivers. Our dry watersheds need their “engineering” assistance.
