Yes! Most people in the county are not aware of this, but there is one river in San Diego County which has beavers, the Santa Margarita River. The Santa Margarita river begins near Temecula, courses through the hills just north of Fallbrook, and continues down into the Camp Pendleton Marine base. Currently, this is the furthest south that any modern Californian has seen beaver in the state. Where did these beavers come from? We don’t know for sure. Some say it was by reintroduction efforts conducted by the California Fish and Game in the early to mid twentieth century. But however they got there, look at the beautiful habitat these beavers have created in the Santa Margarita River valley near Fallbrook:

Just imagine what the San Diego River, San Dieguito River, Sweetwater River, and San Luis Rey Rivers could look like if we reintroduced beavers to these San Diego County rivers!
Contact your California legislators to allow the reintroduction of beavers to San Diego County rivers! They are not an invasive species! They were in these rivers more than 200 years ago. European trapping and colonization wiped them out. Let’s bring them back!
